Facilities in the United States and Canada (Click Here for International Orphanages)

Orphanages were the primary way of caring for indigent or unwanted children in the USA from the mid-19th century into the mid-20th century. After that, foster homes and small institutions like group homes replaced orphanages. Recent studies have shown that well-run orphanages generally offer far better experiences for children than does the foster care system, and some orphanages are once again in operation in the USA. For more, see here.

International Orphanages: Long and Short Term Opportunities

In many orphanages, the staff is overworked, the facility is overcrowded, and the orphanage is low on finances. The orphanages are usually run by local people with local kids. Unless you speak and understand the local language, are willing to eat a simple and meager diet and sleep in crowded conditions, you might not be the best candidate to "help" at these orphanages. Usually you must provide your own finances and your own transportation. Be sure to develop a clear understanding of expectations before you agree to assist in an international orphanage.
